The LUrking Horror

You’re a college student trapped on campus during a snowstorm, forced to confront strange horrors while navigating the mysterious passageways of the school.

The Lurking Horror is an interactive fiction game released by Infocom in 1987, created by Dave Lebling and inspired by the chilling works of H.P. Lovecraft. Set in the snow-covered campus of G.U.E. Tech, players assume the role of a student trying to finish a term paper, only to be drawn into a nightmarish world of dark secrets and supernatural horrors lurking beneath the university. As the blizzard rages outside, players must navigate eerie steam tunnels and deserted buildings, encountering strange creatures and mysterious humans, all while unraveling a sinister plot that threatens to unleash an ancient evil.

Renowned for its atmospheric storytelling and intricate puzzles, The Lurking Horror blends suspense and horror in a text-based format that challenges players’ imaginations. The game was Infocom’s first to incorporate sound effects. It remains a standout title in the realm of interactive fiction, offering a haunting adventure that continues to captivate fans of text-based horror games.

Lurking Horror Tips

  • You will need to refer to the manual for a couple of things near the beginning of the game (see link above).
  • There are several time-sensitive puzzles, so save often.
  • Keep in mind that this is a horror game that includes Lovecraftian-inspired monsters, elements of the occult, and references to suicide.
  • Remember that  these text-based games were made in a different time. Be patient and enjoy the experience. Look around. Try different things. It may take longer to finish these games than you’re used to, but it’s a great experience!
