The Edge of Sleep

Jake Emanuel, Willie Block & Jason Gurley

Two security guards end their overnight shift, and as dawn approaches they begin to realize that the world has not awakened. With a small group of fellow survivors, they set out to find out what is causing the world to die in their sleep — knowing that it’s only a matter of time until sleep takes them too.

For the first half of The Edge of Sleep, I could barely put it down. The story was engaging and the authors did an excellent job of creating suspense. While the characters weren’t particularly likeable, they felt authentic, each with their own distinct personality. The relationships and dialogue came across as natural, something many authors seem to struggle with these days. The plot was reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode, and I couldn’t wait to see where the story went.

Unfortunately, once the main characters uncovered the central mystery, the story slowed down significantly, then took a weird turn. The resolution was left open ended, as if the whole book was designed to be the beginning of a larger story. The introduction of other characters throughout the story was interesting, but I was disappointed the authors didn’t use them as an opportunity to develop them into proper subplots.

While I was disappointed with the unresolved ending, I did enjoy this book for the most part. If you’re looking for something a little different in the horror/thriller genre, you may enjoy this.
