This novel started off interesting, and then turns into a cosmic horror reminiscent of Stephen King’s more under-the-influence books. The mystery surrounding the town and its inhabitants initially really drew me in. However, the story took too sharp a turn into sci-fi and fantasy for me to enjoy it.
The main characters, while well-developed, were really unlikeable, and by the end of the story I didn’t really care what happened to them. Once the protagonists were established in the town, I felt the pacing slowed, and my interest faded. Some scenes were a bit too gross for my taste, while others delved deeper into sci-fi territory than I originally expected. I almost didn’t finish this one, but managed to stick with it, hoping that the ending would make the journey worth it. It did not.
Overall, “Edenville” shows Rebelein’s creativity and willingness to push genre boundaries. If you enjoy cosmic horror with strong sci-fi elements, you might appreciate this book.
